Palace was a widely popular card game in my high school during the 90's. It gained popularity not only among backpackers, as mentioned on Wikipedia, but also became widespread elsewhere.
This version of Palace is designed for two players. The game offers eight different computer characters with unique playing styles for players to compete against. Additionally, multiplayer mode allows players to play with a friend.
Here are some helpful tips for playing Palace:
- Select or deselect cards by tapping on them. Multiple cards of the same kind can be selected. To discard selected cards, either click on the discard pile or use a swipe gesture.
- If you make a mistake, you can use the Undo button located at the top right of the screen to revert your last move.
- If you have a large number of cards in your hand, turn the screen sideways to widen your view.
Now let's review the basic rules of Palace:
- At the start of the game, each player is dealt three 'face-down cards' that remain unseen and unchangeable until the end of the game. Three 'face-up cards' are then placed on top. Three cards are dealt to each player to form their hand. Players can switch cards between their 'hand' and 'face-up cards', if desired.
- The game begins with the player holding a 3 or the next lowest card.
- During each turn, players must discard a card (or multiple cards of the same value) that is greater than or equal to the card on top of the pick-up pile. They must then draw enough cards from the deck to ensure they have at least three cards in their hand, unless the deck is empty or they already have three or more cards in their hand.
- Wild cards in the game are 2's and 10's. A 2 resets the pile, while a 10 clears the pile. Having a set of four cards of the same value, such as four 10's, also clears the pile.
- If a player doesn't have a card in their hand that is greater than or equal to the card on top of the pile, or a wild card, they must pick up the entire pile.
- Once players have no more cards in their hand and the deck is empty, they proceed to play their face-up cards. After all face-up cards have been played, players move on to playing their face-down cards.
- The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the game.
